Fred Sanders wrote, “Christology is the doctrinal locus where Christianity has the greatest need for theological precision. To be wrong here is to be wrong everywhere.” He clearly does not take the study of Christ lightly, and he has a point. At the heart of evangelism is the question, “Who do you think Jesus was, and how will you respond?” Really, that’s the question that shapes all of human life! Hopefully part of the reason you’re a member, a visitor, or just interested in Uptown is because you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, or you’re at least curious to know why we believe he is.

This week we will be looking at Hebrews 2:5-9, where the author of Hebrews marvels at how much God loves us. Who are we that God would give us so much honor? Who are we that God would love us enough to take on human flesh to die on the cross? Why would the God who was rich beyond all splendor become a poor and suffering servant? Because He loves us. Because He knew that through His death and resurrection He would be glorified and we would receive glory through Him. The Bible clearly teaches that the consequences of sin is death. So how could the perfect and sinless savior, Jesus, die? Surely he didn’t deserve it. Sanders also writes, “He died the only death there is to die, our death.” Jesus was a little while lower than the angels in order to taste death on our behalf so that we may have life in him.
