My personal reading habits spoil every story I read. My book reading strategy is to read the first chapter of a book, then skip to the very last page. There are many reasons people do this, but mine is that I care for the characters and want to make sure everyone’s going to be ok. By the time the final Harry Potter book came out I had spent my entire childhood growing up with Harry, Ron, and Hermione and even though I knew it would ruin the suspense, I read the epilogue as soon as I got my hands on it. Even if the ending of a book is sad, I need to emotionally prepare myself for the sadness.

We have made it to the final chain in the Ordo Salutis. The worship guide has had the whole Order of Salvation printed along the bottom, so surely at some point you’ve seen that Glorification was where we were headed this whole time. Or, if you skip to the last page of your Bible, you’ll see the same thing. Revelation 22:3-6 says, 3No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.” It should not be a surprise that we are headed to glory since our chief end has always been to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. God loves us enough that He spoils the end of all history in order to give us comfort and joy. We know where we are headed, we know what lengths God went in order to bring us there, and we can live peacefully now knowing our inheritance is guaranteed through the blood of the Lamb.

Since we have made it through a series with a Latin title, I encourage you to meditate on a hymn with a Latin title. The Gloria Patri has been sung as a doxology throughout churches since the second century. Its words are simple and easy to memorize and sing to yourself throughout the day to remember where we have come from and where we are going. It reads:

Glory be to the Father
and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen, amen.
