What Is Discipleship Training?

At Uptown we are convinced that one of the central purposes of the church is to train its members to minister effectively to one another, to their communities, and ultimately to the world. Thus, Discipleship Training at Uptown Church can be defined as “Equipping the saints for the work of the ministry.” The biblical basis for this training can be found in Ephesians 4:11-13:

11And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

This passage reveals a divine pattern for the church to follow: i) God has established leaders; ii) Leaders “prepare” God’s people; iii) God’s people do “works of service”; iv) The body of Christ is built up. Discipleship Training is designed to fulfill this pattern by equipping God’s people for the good works he has prepared in advance for them to do (Ephesians 2:10).

Mentor-Based Discipleship Training

The concept of mentor-based training allows for discipleship within the contexts of loving relationships focused upon the specific needs of each person, rather than occurring in a “one size fits all” manner. If you are interested in being connected with a one-on-one mentor, contact Dave Kulp (Men’s Ministry) at 704.564.8184 or davekulp@uptownchurch.org.

In addition, we have launched group-based men’s discipleship groups that are focused on various topics of sanctification and growth in the Christian faith, from raising children to handling finances to sexual purity. Below is a list of current groups for men. To find out more about our discipleship groups, or to join a group contact Tom Queen (ruling elder) at twqueen@gmail.com.
