One of my favorite scenes in any movie is the end of The Lion King. Simba finally returns home to defeat Scar in order to take back the kingdom which was rightfully Simba’s. After the battle, it begins to rain, a sign that life is returning to the pride lands. Rafiki tells Simba, “It is time,” and Simba starts his long, slow walk up Pride Rock as the dramatic music kicks in. Simba roars; the female lionesses roar. I’ve watched it a thousand times, and every time I still can’t help but get excited. Why? Because the rightful king is on the throne! And the story doesn’t end there. As the scene changes, we see a newly restored pride lands. What had been reduced to a barren desert under the rule of Scar is now changed into a green, vibrant grassland under the true king. The rightful king is now on the throne, and when the rightful king is on the throne, good things happen for the people. Prosperity follows.

As Americans, we hold strongly to the belief that who are rulers are makes a difference for the people that they rule. This is why we get so up in arms during election season. If we have the right leader, they will lead the nation towards prosperity by working for the good of the people. But the truth is that there is only one leader who will ever truly change the world for our best, our God and King Jesus Christ. No senator, president or judge will ever put an end to the sin in the world. No human leader will ever end racism, cause all wars to cease, or end unemployment. No earthly ruler will change the hearts of the people they rule. Even if all wars were to cease, we would still be trapped in the sin and bitterness of our own hearts. We would still envy our neighbor’s house, yell at our kids, and resent our overbearing bosses. You need a ruler who not only rules over the world, but who also changes the hearts of His people. Only one king can do that.

We look forward to the day when the rightful King of the universe will return to earth and put an end to humanity’s rebellion and sin. On that day, creation will be renewed as God works all things for the good of His people. All wars and divisions will cease, and the hearts of we who trust in Him will be changed. Anger, bitterness, lust, and selfishness will be wiped away from our hearts forever. Jesus is the only ruler who will ever satisfy our longings and provide for all the needs of His people. In the meantime, we should be grateful for those godly human leaders that the Lord has given us and pray for the men and women that God has placed over us, in our families, in our jobs, and in our nation.
