We are often so confused about the trouble we face in life. Trouble, tribulation, suffering – whatever you want to call it – is something that we will inevitably face in life and yet we are often so terrified of facing it because it hurts and it confuses us and it has the potential to lead us to despair. We fear that when we come to the troubles of life that we will be confused about what God is doing and we will doubt him and begin to wonder if he really cares about us at all.
The cross is like a lighthouse that calls us to God in the midst of the storms of life. The disciples were most confused and in despair when they saw their lord crucified on a Roman cross. God had come to earth to die on a cross? What did this mean? Yet now we know that he was saving his people from sin and death itself. Death which is the most terrifying and confusing thing of all our troubles. It was in this trouble and this confusing time that the Lord brings salvation. So as we face various trials and troubles in this life we can look to Christ and the cross knowing that God is very present in danger because he was the most present in our greatest troubles of sin and death.
