Getting Ready For Sunday: How to Prepare for Worship at Uptown, July 5th, 2015

When would you say you most need guidance? Is it something that comes upon you or is it something which you are driven to seek out? We most need guidance when a problem arises or a decision has to be made. The more that is on the line in our decisions the more urgent our need is for a solution. Our situations drive our need for guidance.

Our knee jerk reaction is to find a quick solution when a problem arises. The bigger the issue the more likely it is that we will settle for an easy solution. However, this is where we make mistakes. We feel such a need for solutions that we are almost willing to find them anywhere. If we hear something that pleases us we often take the advice. It is counterintuitive, but the Lord tells us to wait on him. We find guidance in his Word.

We often desire instant gratification. We can think of receiving guidance as if it were searchable on wikipedia. When we don’t receive it immediately we panic and continue to scrap for answers. God has told us that his Word is to be trusted because he is trustworthy. His Word is our sure source of guidance. Let us turn to the Word of the Lord, seeking him out and waiting upon him for guidance.

RESPONSIVE READINGS

Confession of Sin

L: Creator God, sovereign and merciful, you are the LORD who sets the prisoners free; who opens the eyes of the blind; who lifts up those who are bowed down; who loves the righteous; who watches over the so- journers.

P: But we sinfully look to fallen man, to princes and politicians and personalities to show us the way. We so often place our trust in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation, and whose plans perish the day his breath departs. Lord, have mercy!

L: LORD, you have revealed to us the wisdom of God in your very word. You have declared your own intentions to build your church, not by might, nor by power, but by your Spirit.

P: Yet finding it too difficult to discern the will of God, we faithlessly turn to lesser leaders, to groomsmen, and even to wolves for guid- ance. Lord have mercy, restore us by your Spirit, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
