Why is it that a show like Jerry Springer or Maury draws such attention? Granted no one takes these shows seriously, but there is still a big enough audience to keep them running. The show is built around a quarrel. The same goes for much of reality TV. For those who watch these shows the purpose of watching them is not to discover truth, but to watch a fight. In fact the quarrel is a distraction from the truth. The Bible talks of false teaching and ignorant controversies as breeding quarrels. As long as we quarrel we will be taking people further from the truth. Therefore the Bible has given us principles in how we are to conduct ourselves in the midst of false teaching.
2 Timothy 2:23-26 gives principles for the Lord’s servant. Among these principles is kindness, patience and gentleness in the midst of a quarrel. Our natural tendency is to vindicate ourselves with anger, harsh words and worldly power. As the Lord’s servant we are called to be like our Master. He was ‘oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth.’ Our Lord was carried to his death by the ones he came to save and in the midst of this he was gentle, kind and loving. He shows us such a radical love. He loves His enemies. We too were once his enemies, seeking to quarrel with our Master. He has treated us with kindness and love so that we may be saved. Therefore we too can love those who seek to quarrel with us in the hope that they ‘may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil.’
